Head Coach
Washington men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar was named to head up the program at his alma mater on April 3, 2002. A point guard for the Huskies’ 1978-79 and 1979-80 teams, is the 18th head coach in Washington’s 101-year history. He is the first African-American coach to lead the Washington basketball program.
High school: Pius X, Compton, Calif.
Playing career
Cerritos (Calif.) Community College, 1976-78: Romar was an all-league player his sophomore season, averaging 14.1 points and 6.5 assists.
University of Washington, 1978-80: Romar was the Huskies' most inspirational player both seasons. As a senior captain, he averaged 9.3 points and 3.5 assists for Coach Marv Harshman's NIT team.
Romar played four full seasons and part of a fifth in the NBA, with Golden State and Milwaukee.
He averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 assists in 286 games.
Romar played for Athletes in Action for seven seasons, from 1985-92.
His best season was his last, when he averaged 24.4 points and 5.9 assists.
