Offensive Line Coach
Assistant coach Brent Myers faced a unique set of challenges during his first two years on the Husky staff. In 2000, Myers took over the offensive line coaching duties from the highly respected Keith Gilbertson, who moved up to the UW's offensive coordinator position. Myers had four returning starters that season, and helped to mold them into one of the nation's best blocking units that led the Huskies to the Pac-10 title and a Rose Bowl Championship. Two of the seniors on that unit, Elliot Silvers and Chad Ward, were All-Pac-10 selections and went on to be drafted by NFL teams and a third, Wes Call, signed a free agent contract. Ward also won the Morris Trophy, given to the Pac-10’s top lineman, and was a second-team All-American. Last season Myers faced the task of building the offensive line around one returning starter. Despite the number of inexperienced players, the Husky line proved to be one of the best in the Pac-10. Kyle Benn, the lone senior, earned All-Pac-10 honors and was a regional Academic All-American.
Myers came to Washington after a brief stint at the University of Arizona, where he was coaching the offensive line during spring practice. Prior to that Myers had worked as the offensive coordinator at Boise State. In 1999, Boise State led the Big West in offense with 33 points per game and averaged more than 414 yards per game in total offense while posting a 10-3 record. Myers joined the Boise State staff in 1998 and was promoted to offensive coordinator before the start of the 1999 season. At BSU, he helped lead the Broncos to the 1999 Big West Conference championship and a 34-31 victory over Louisville in the Humanitarian Bowl.
Myers was an assistant at Northern Arizona from 1992 to 1997, when current Husky assistant coach Steve Axman was head coach. |
