| Biography: |
| “How will the Trojans replace a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback?” “Who will lead the Trojan offense?” “Which of the four remaining quarterbacks is going to try and get the ball into the hands of the real playmakers on offense?” To any question the doubters had at the beginning of the 2003 football season, the answer at the end of the season almost invariably turned out to be “Matt Leinart.” Not only did Matt Leinart step in and fill the shoes of the departed Carson Palmer; he even managed to surpass Palmer’s 2002 numbers in most categories while putting up PlayStation-like statistics of his own. Three thousand five hundred and fifty-six yards, 38 touchdown passes against only 9 interceptions, and a slew of national and Pac-10 awards later, the Trojans have yet another quarterback in the Heisman Trophy race and seemingly destined for NFL fame. The Matt Leinart experiment got off to a bang in his first game against Auburn with his first collegiate pass going for a touchdown strike to Mike Williams. He finished the game an extremely effective 17 of 30 passing for 192 yards with that touchdown. These would turn out to be pedestrian numbers compared to the rest of the season, but at the time, the sigh of relief coming from the Trojan faithful at the fact that we could rely on this new quarterback could be heard all the way from Jordan-Hare stadium. In the early season, games against BYU and Cal showed Leinart’s relative inexperience as he threw three interceptions in both games. However, in the season’s final nine games, Leinart blossomed into one of college football’s premier signal callers and began the first stages of scratching his name into USC’s record books. His return from a knee and ankle injury in the second half at Arizona State could be pinpointed as the exact moment his and the entire 2003 USC football team’s season took off. He averaged almost 300 yards passing per game in his last eight and threw for multiple touchdowns in each as well, finishing the regular season by throwing for five touchdown passes, tying the USC single-game record, against Oregon State. Leinart, however, was only saving his best for last. In the Rose Bowl, against a vaunted Big-10 Michigan defense, Matt Leinart threw for three touchdown passes and 327 yards while threading the ball over, under, and around defenders. But perhaps Leinart’s signature play from the 2003 season didn’t come from his left arm. Leinart found himself all alone in the defensive backfield after starting a reverse that ended with Mike Williams connecting with the quarterback for a 15-yard touchdown pass which left the game in little doubt and etched Matt Leinart’s name on the Rose Bowl MVP Trophy. It almost seems unfair to the rest of the Pac-10 that the NCAA would allow Matt Leinart to play quarterback again for the Trojans in 2004. A junior now with a solid season and off-season as the number one quarterback can only mean that Leinart is more comfortable and confident than ever in his role as the team leader. It will be challenging for him to exceed the numbers he put up in 2003, but challengers are never something Leinart has shied away from. The expectations will be great, but the sky is the limit in 2004 for “Heis-Matt Leinart.” |
