Head Coach
Keith Gilbertson, junior, a highly-respected figure in Northwest football coaching circles, was named the school's 24th head football coach on July 29th, 2003. He replaces Rick Neuheisel, who was suspended on June 11th and terminated July 28th.
Gilby is in his fifth year at Washington on this, his third tenure as a Husky coach. He was Neuheisel's offensive coordinator for three seasons, a position that he previously held when the Huskies won the national championship in 1991.
Gilbertson left Washington following the Huskies’ 1991 national championship season to take over as the head coach at California. Gilbertson has held the title of head coach on the collegiate level for a total of seven seasons. His four-year stint as the Golden Bears’ coach was highlighted by the 1993 team that posted a 9-4 record and defeated Iowa 37-3 in the Alamo Bowl. That win stands as California’s last bowl victory. Gilbertson is also the last Cal coach to pin a loss on archrival Stanford. Gilbertson is one of six Husky assistant coaches who have served as a head coach or coordinator on the collegiate level.
Gilbertson grew up in Snohomish, Wash., where his father has been a long-time prep coach. He attended Snohomish High School before going on to play football at Columbia Basin Junior College in 1967. He was a defensive lineman at Hawaii in 1969-70 before returning to earn his bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Central Washington in 1971. Gilbertson earned a degree in education from Western Washington in 1974. He and his wife, Barbara, have three children. |
