THE APPLE CUP IS COMING HOME!

PULLMAN—Finally, it is over. Washington’s six-season Apple Cup dominance of Washington State fell with a thud today, as the Cougars won another nail-biter against the Dawgs, 28-25, in front of a frenzied Martin Stadium crowd and a live ABC-TV audience.
So what if WSU ended the streak against the most hapless bunch of Huskies to walk on the gridiron since, well, ever. That mattered little to a Cougar Nation that had not raised the Apple Cup in victory since 1997.
The Cougars held a seemingly comfortable 28-10 lead midway through the third quarter but saw that margin narrow to three with just over four minutes to play. There were not many seats empty in Martin Stadium as both the home fans and Husky visitors held on to the bitter end to see the Cougs survive for their first Cup win in seven tries.
Will Derting
The Cougars out-played the Huskies in yardage and took advantage of four turnovers, one ending in
Will Derting
’s
second career touchdown, as he recovered a fumble in the endzone.
Moments after UW quarterback
Isaiah Stanback
was chased out of bounds to end the contest, the field was stormed, the WSU fight song was sung and the goal post was climbed in celebration of the monumental victory.
Cougar running back
Jerome Harrison
contributed mightily to the WSU offensive output, topping the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth time this season. He gained 150 yards on 29 carries and wraps up the 2004 campaign with an even 900 ground yards.
Alex Brink
BRINK’S RARE FEAT
Alex Brink
became just the fourth freshman quarterback in the last 30 years to start an Apple Cup Game for the Cougars. But unlike
Matt Kegel
(2000),
Ryan Leaf
(1995) and
Drew Bledsoe
(1990), Brink came out with a victory. Brink, like Kegel and Leaf, stepped in as a second-year freshman. Bledsoe was a true freshman.
Brink completed 15 of 24 passes for 240 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
He also scored the Cougs' second touchdown with a one-yard plunge in the first quarter.
Jason Hill
HILL ON TOP
With four catches for 78 yards, Cougar sophomore
Jason Hill
became the sixth receiver in WSU history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He joins a memorable list of names:
Nakoa McElrath, Tim Stallworth, Mike Levenseller, CJ Davis
and
Chris Jackson
. Hill also surpassed
Chris Jackson, Devard Darling,
and
Kevin McKenzie
with his 12th touchdown reception tonight, putting him alone atop the single-season list for scoring receptions.
BUMPUS COMES CLOSE TO RECORD
Michael Bumpus
narrowly missed the record for WSU’s single-season record in punt return yardage. Bumpus left the game with a leg injury in the second quarter and finished out the season with 388 yards; he missed the record of 405 shared by
Shawn Tims
and
Sammy Moore
by 17 yards.
Check back later tonight on CF.C for more Apple Cup coverage.
