Washington got some great news Monday morning when Centennial (Compton, Ca.) WR Kevin Smith decided…
Commitment Impact: Kevin Smith
The talented wideout from Compton was a relative unknown heading into the season after playing only five games of football as a junior.
Up until the 2008 season, Smith had been a basketball player and hadn't thought about playing football, but because of his size, Eric Scott, the former UCLA receivers coach asked him to come out for football and behold, a star was born.
We're still trying to get correct stats from Smith's first full season of football, but midway through the season the talented wideout had over 20 receptions for 600 yards and nine touchdowns. He helped lead Centennial to a 7-4 record and the playoffs where they ended up losing to Harvard-Westlake in the first round.
Smith's size/speed combination is a perfect fit in Washington's pro-style scheme where head coach Steve Sarkisian asks his wideouts to make plays with the ball in their hands. He's obviously a very raw prospect since he's never really worked on route-running and how to read defenses, but because there is so much to work with the sky is the limit for his potential.
Next fall, Smith, Campbell and Lowe will combine with juniors Devin Aguilar and Jermaine Kearse and sophomore James Johnson to form a talented group of wideouts that could be the equal of almost any in the country.
At this time it appears Washington is done recruiting wideouts, but if the right prospect comes along they may figure out a way to fit him in.
However, count Smith as another recruiting coup for the Huskies, and especially Washington cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin who ran point on the recruitment of the talented So Cal prospect.
