Trip Report - Derrick Malone

One of the more popular safety prospects in California right now is Colton's Derrick Malone, a 6-1, 200-pound bruiser who helped lead his team to a 10-2 record and the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs. caught up with the talented DB as he awaited his flight at Sea-Tac Airport Sunday evening after taking his official visit to Montlake and he updated us on where things stand...

"It was a really good visit," Malone said matter-of-factly. "No one leads right now and all of them are even in my book."

All of them consists of Washington, Arizona, Oregon and Nebraska. Of those four, Malone has only visited the Cornhuskers and Huskies and he plans to take visits to the other two in the next two weeks.

"Washington was cool, I liked it a lot," Malone said. "The coaches are really cool and they are intense and that really has an effect on their players.

"They played a great game and that stadium and their crowd was hyped. I had a blast at the game."

Nate Williams was Malone's host on his trip and he said the junior safety let him know what to expect should he decide to become a Husky.

"He was really cool and he had a great game out on the field," Malone said. "He's one of their leaders out there and he said that's something the coaches expect out of their safeties.

"Meeting with coach (Jeff) Mills and going over film and watching different safety prospects was probably the highlight of my trip. It was all fun though. I had a great time."

Malone said he will be in Eugene this Thursday in order to watch the Ducks take on Oregon State in the Civil War and then will head to Arizona the following weekend to wrap things up.

"Those are my top four and when I get home from the last visit I will sit down and make my decision," Malone said. "I'd like to make it before the holidays, but if not I will just make sure I'm comfortable enough to decide and then that's when I will do it so it could be in January when I make it."

We'll have more in the coming weeks from Malone as he finishes up the recruiting process.
