Another heartbreaking loss for the Huskies

It's been 23 months since Washington won a road game, but Saturday night in Tempe, the Huskies had a chance to break that infamous streak. However, a coverage breakdown resulted in a heart-breaking 24-17 loss to Arizona State in front of 53,219 fans at Sun Devil Stadium.

With :13 left on the clock and the teams tied at 17 apiece, embattled Arizona State QB Danny Sullivan dropped back from midfield and fired a hail marry into the waiting arms of WR Chris McGaha who had inexplicably gotten behind the Washington secondary for the winning touchdown.

Things were chippy early as both teams were flagged for numerous personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, resulting in key first downs for each offense.

Washington got the scoring started on their first drive when Husky QB Jake Locker hit WR Devin Aguilar for a 49-yard touchdown. The drive, which covered 80 yards in seven plays, was extended by the first of four personal foul calls on Sun Devil freshman MLB Vontaze Burfict, setting them up with a first down on the 49 of ASU.

The Sun Devils answered quickly though, marching 74 yards in eight plays, ending when Sullivan punched it in from one yard out.

The Sun Devil defense manhandled the Huskies the rest of the half, while their offense was able to get a 32-yard touchdown pass from WR Kyle Williams to WR T.J. Simpson on a trick play.

Washington had a chance to bring the score to within four, but K Erik Folk missed his first attempt in seven tried, shanking the ball wide left from 46 yards out, sending the teams to the locker room with Arizona State up 14-7.

In the third quarter, Washington's defense held tough once again when a team entered the red zone allowing just a 24-yard field goal from Thomas Weber. Weber, who has a severely pulled groin, missed two other attempts -- from 41 and 40 -- on the night.

With the Sun Devils leading by 10, the Huskies began to march a comeback late in the third period, as they were able to move the ball 72 yards in seven plays, ending when RB Chris Polk, who was held in check most of the evening, bounced off a pileup and got loose for a 23-yard touchdown run, bring the score to within three.

Washington then began to really get after Sullivan and the rest of the ASU offense while the offense moved the ball far enough to get into position for Folk's 29-yard field goal with 3:50 remaining in the game.

The teams traded possessions with Washington having a chance to run out the clock, but they were unable to get a first down and that resulted in the game-winning play from Sullivan to McGaha.

Sullivan's final stats belied his lack of productivity most of the evening. He finished 21 of 35 for 263 yards and the game-winning touchdown, while freshman wide receiver Gerell Robinson finished with five catches for 68 yards and running backs Cameron Mashall and Demitri Nance combined for 146 yards on the ground.

For the Huskies, Locker heated up after a cold second quarter to go 22 of 38 for 279 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, one coming on the one yard line ending a Washington scoring opportunity.

Polk managed to post 51 yards rushing and notched the one touchdown while Aguilar had his biggest night as a Husky, hauling in seven receptions for 154 yards and the first touchdown.

Arizona State managed 464 yards of total offense to Washington's 378 and they also won the turnover battle, posting only one to the Huskies' three.

The Huskies (3-4, 2-2) will now head home and get ready to host one of their two biggest rivals, the 5-1 Oregon Ducks at Husky Stadium next Saturday.
