In four seasons as the head coach at the University of Washington, Tyrone Willingham won exactly 11 games. In Berkley on early Saturday afternoon he had a chance to win his final game at the helm of the Huskies, but like 36 other games, he failed in his last attempt to salvage anything from this forgettable season, losing to Cal on the road 48 – 7.
Willingham’s charges were outclassed from the very beginning of the game.
California
’s offense ran roughshod though the Husky defense, posting over 500 yards of offense and 52 points.
Cal RB
Jahvid Best
, a sophomore, had his best day as a collegian, rushing for 186 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone en route to a 311 yard, four touchdown performance against the Huskies. Best also had touchdown runs of one, 20 and 84 yards before he was taken out of the game only four minutes into the third quarter, but by the time he exited he had the school-record for rushing yards in a game and he was also able to claim the Pac 10 rushing title by rushing for 1,394 yards.
The scoring started on Cal’s first possession of the game when Best took a handoff 60 yards on the fourth play of the game, outracing the entire
Washington
secondary who appeared to have the angle on the talented back.
Kevin Riley
got the start at quarterback for Cal, but he gave way to senior
Nate Longshore
, playing his last game in Strawberry Canyon, who managed to complete five of 10 passes for 84 yards and one touchdown, a six-yard touchdown pass to TE
Cameron Morrah
.
Washington’s offense couldn’t get out of their own way most of the team, fumbling twice and throwing two interceptions leading to 24 Cal points.
Husky QB
Ronnie Fouch
, the starter since late October after
Jake Locker
went down with a thumb injury, suffered a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit from Cal LB
Worrell Williams
and he was replaced by walk-on
Taylor Bean
who had only seen snaps during garbage time up until Saturday.
Bean had a respectable day considering the circumstances, completing 8 of 17 passes for 80 yards while posting Washington’s only score of the game, a two-yard scamper late in the third quarter.
With the loss, Willingham fell to 11-37 as the head coach at Washington and he departs as the coach with the worst winning percentage in school history.
