There was an air of trepidation as fans milled around outside of Husky Stadium. The skies were clear and the weather was a comfortable 74 degrees at kickoff, but looming on the horizon was a storm from the plains of Oklahoma and the Sooners put a 55-14 beatdown on the Huskies in front of 67,716 fans who began filing out in the second quarter.
Oklahoma
QB
Sam Bradford
had an easy day, efficiently running the Sooner offense, completing 18 of 21 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns, while running backs DeMarco Murry (100 yards),
Chris Brown
(107 yards) and
Mossis Madu
(44 yards and two touchdowns) helped lead a ground game that amassed over 260 yards.
Washington
’s defense was helpless against the Sooner line that is about as veteran as you can get and the Sooner receivers had a field day as TE
Jermaine Gresham
put up the biggest yardage of the day, hauling in three passes for 99 yards including a 64-yard touchdown, WR
Ryan Broyles
managed to post only three catches, but they went for 85 yards and two scores – including a marvelous 77-yard catch and run – and senior WR
Juaquin Iglesias
led the receivers with six receptions for 65 yards and the Sooners’ first touchdown, a 13 yard touchdown on Oklahoma’s first drive of the day.
The Husky offense at times was effective, but three turnovers – all fumbles – cost them dearly.
The only two highlights on the night were a
Jake Locker
15-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter and a 38-yard touchdown pass from backup QB
Ronnie Fouch
to RB
Brandon Yakaboski
who managed to haul the football in after it was tipped.
On defense, Washington was led in tackles by freshman S
Johri Fogerson
, who got the start for the injured
Darin Harris
, with nine tackles, but Fogerson was also the man who missed tackles against Broyles and Gresham on their long touchdown receptions.
Oklahoma’s reserves played a majority of the second half, but the Sooners were still able to manage 580 yards of total offense to Washington’s 332.
Washington Fouch subbed in for Locker late in the third quarter and finished the game for the Huskies, completing 7 of 13 for 91 yards and a touchdown, Locker led the Huskies in rushing with 44 yards on 12 carries, while freshman
David Freeman
, getting his first start, rushed for 42 yards.
Luckily for the Huskies, they have a week to regroup before facing
Stanford
(1-2) at Husky Stadium on September 22nd.
