Clay high on the Dawgs

Clay high on the Dawgs

The Washington coaches have pretty much planted their flag outside of the Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose, Ca.) football program, offering two players early in the process while courting a third. LB Michael Clay was one of the early offers and he updated Dawgman.com recently about his spring and some plans for this summer.

"It's been a really good spring I think," Clay told Dawgman.com recently. "I got MVP of the Nike camp at Stanford and I got All-Combine at the (Under Armour/Scout.com) combine a couple weeks ago, so it's been a lot of fun."

As a junior, Clay amassed 110 tackles for the Bells and helped them win the West Catholic Athletic League while also being named the WCAL linebacker of the year.

"I'm real quick in my reads and I have good speed so I can cover backs and tight ends," Clay noted. "I think I'm probably better over the tight end so the strongside is where I will probably end up, but I can play weakside too, it doesn't really matter to me."

So far, Clay claims offers from nine schools -- Oregon, UNLV, Washington State, Utah, Fresno State, California, New Mexico, Colorado and Washington -- and the Huskies have made a solid early impression on the playmaking linebacker.

"They are definitely an up-and-coming program with coach (Tyrone) Willingham and Jake Locker there," Clay said. "They were real young last year and they should be pretty good this year.

"I know they are losing some linebackers this year so they are definitely a school I'm really high on."

Clay had hoped to make Washington's camp later this month, but he said that isn't going to happen.

"I wanted to make it up there, but things just didn't work out for me to get up there," Clay said. "I might try and still take an unofficial visit up there sometime this summer, but right now I will probably just take an official visit up there either during or after my season."

Clay noted that he is likely to take all of his visits before he makes a decision on which school he wants to attend, but he also added, "if it feels right, then I will commit to a school, but I want to take my visits."

We'll have more from Clay after he takes in a day at the Cal camp later this month.
