Garcia may have to call it a day

SEATTLE - During Friday's scrimmage, Juan Garcia suffered a lisfranc injury to his left foot during a massive pileup. It was an injury similar to the one that took Isaiah Stanback out of his final season as a Husky, and the one Garcia suffered looks like it might do the same to the UW center who was granted a sixth year because of missed time due to earlier injuries.

"I had an MRI and they said they couldn't tell if it was bad or not, and then I had a CAT scan, which gave me a glimpse of hope," Garcia said Tuesday. "But today I got the answer that I tore something in my foot. So I have to decide; if I have surgery then I'm probably out until late in the year or I could let it heal and take a chance. If in four weeks it doesn't look like it's healing, then it totally takes me out."

Garcia missed all of 2004 and 2005 because of significant leg and ankle injuries.

"It's unfortunate, and it's hard," Washington guard Jordan White-Frisbee of the situation the offensive line now finds itself. 2007 starting guard Ryan Tolar has missed all of spring rehabbing a shoulder injury he suffered during the season. "But we've come back from worse. I expect him to be back full-force."

Garcia isn't as sure, though.

"I know those guys will do anything to keep my hopes up," he said. "The hardest thing is that I knew that I had a chance to leave as a good offensive lineman. It hurts.

Garcia said he's going to take a day to decide whether he's going to go the surgery route or rehab. Either way, he doesn't want to be seen as just a guy that comes in for a play or two to cap off his Husky career.

"That's the hard part," he said. "We finally got the squad to do it. We had a group that I was proud of. I love them and they love me.

"I've already got my degree, but it's just not the way I wanted to go out."

White-Frisbee, who missed all of 2005 rehabbing a foot he had injured that spring, understands what it's like to be away from the game. "There's nothing out there for me other than football," he said. "Without it, I would go crazy. He loves the game enough and has such a good attitude about it already, I know he'll be back."
