Lewis covers his bases

After a tough senior season, that saw his team take a step backwards, Washington CB Roy Lewis started focusing on his future, as both a football player and what life will be like after he graduates this June. Dawgman.com caught up with the Huskies’ top defensive back recently and he talked about what he’s been up to and the upcoming Pro Day on March 14th.
“It was important that I took some time off after the season,” Lewis admitted to Dawgman.com recently. “I think the whole team was in agreement on that. Everybody just took time to get their minds and thoughts back into the game of football before they got back into it hard.
“I took that whole break off to let my body fully recover because it was a long season and I had some nicks and bruises that I had to get healed up and after that I just got back to work.”
Lewis’ senior season as a Dawg was his best. He posted finished second on the team in tackles with 94 and led the team in passes defensed with 10. He also posted one interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Even with that big season statistically, Lewis didn’t receive any post season All-Conference honors and he was snubbed by the NFL Combine that was held over two weeks ago.
“I have no idea,” Lewis responded when asked why he thought he wasn’t invited to Indianapolis. “That’s just how it is. I haven’t really thought about it. I’m just playing the cards I was dealt because there’s nothing I can do.
“I don’t have any thoughts on who gets invited and why other guys didn’t get invited, because that’s not really my responsibility to get all uptight and wound up about things like that because we have no say in things like that.”
Now Lewis’ focus has turned toward
Washington
’s Pro Day which will be held on Friday, March 14th at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
“I’m definitely going to go out there on Pro Day and perform and we’ll see how it goes from there,” Lewis said. “Basically I just have to run, that’s all it comes down to, you have to go out and run. You have to be able to play football, that’s a given, but you have to be able to run and that’s the most important thing.
“I’m just going to train hard and show up on Pro Day and run to the best of my ability.”
Part of running well has been his training regimen. He’s been working out at Montlake since he returned from Christmas break and, while football is a big focus for him, he’s also focused on life after football.
“I didn’t choose to train down in California because I had some classes to finish and that was more of my priority – getting these classes knocked down and getting ready to graduate in June – so I just came back up here,” Lewis noted. “I’ve been training at the U with a couple of other players like
Quintin Daniels
, Ceasar (Rayford),
Anthony Russo
and
Robert Lewis
, a couple of guys who aren’t finished with their classes either, so we just decided to train together and make each other better.”
Lewis also added that he plans to attend Washington’s spring game on April 26th, the same days as the first two rounds of the NFL Draft, and then work out while waiting to find out his fate with the pros.
