Former Washington forward Bobby Jones was taken No. 37 in the second round of the NBA Basketball Draft Wednesday night in New York City by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jones' selection follows that of former hoop dawg Brandon Roy, who went No 6. to Minnesota, but was later traded to Portland.
And just like his teammate Roy, Jones was briefly headed to Minnesota before eventually being traded to the Philadelphia 76'ers later Wednesday night.
Ever since Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar took over as the head basketball coach at
Washington
there have been talented players coming through and moving on. Nate Robinson,
Will Conroy
,
Tre Simmons
and
Brandon Roy
formed the nucleus of a team that helped usher the Dawgs into ranks of the college basketball elite.
One player whose skills complemented to playmaking and shooting abilities of the aforementioned players is Jones, and he’s been a constant since Romar came to Montlake.
Jones, who hails from Long Beach Poly High School, was Romar’s first recruit and his stalwart defensive play garnered him national attention over the past two seasons, especially in Washington’s second-round game versus
Illinois
sharpshooter
Dee Brown
.
His 134 steals rank him fourth on the all-time Husky list and even improved his perimeter game by hitting 31-of-61 from beyond the arc as a junior.
Because of his low-profile among his peers, Jones snuck up on some people this spring in pre-Draft workouts, but teams began to take notice of his defensive and rebounding skills the more they saw of him - garnering uncanny comparisons to current
San Antonio Spurs
defensive specialist
Bruce Bowen
