What should have been a great weekend for Gig Harbor (Wash.) S Jake Merrill got off to an auspicious…
Merrill commits to Huskies
"All week I have been playing phone tag with the coaches from Washington, so I knew they were trying to get in touch with me."
And this afternoon, Merrill said defensive backs coach Steve Wilks finally made contact.
"He told me that I would have an early Christmas present from him and coach Willingham today and that it would be an offer," Merrill said. "I was totally jacked about the whole thing. I was hoping that is what was going to happen and it did.
"When I got home, I read it and then sat down with my mom and dad and we talked about it. I decided there wasn't any need to draw things out. I knew where I wanted to go.
"When I called coach Willingham I told him I wanted to be a Husky and he was really excited. He asked me if I could abide by his rules and the way he does things and play hard. I said I had no problem with that and that I will make him proud."
Merrill, who was recently named the Defensive MVP of the Narrows League and 1st-Team all area by the Tacoma News Tribune, had been getting a lot of interest lately from several schools, including Boise State, Oregon, Colorado, Oregon State and Washington State, but his number one choice had been the Huskies.
"All of those other schools are great, but I have known for a while that I wanted to be a Husky," Merrill said.
"I can go there, get a great education, play some great football and be in my hometown. What could be better?"
Merrill says that every school recruiting him was looking at him as strictly a safety and he says that Willingham and Wilks have told him they need an enforcer in the secondary.
"They said 'We need hitters and we think you're a big hitter' so I'm not going to let them down," Merrill said.
"It means a lot to me that they aren't just recruiting me because they have to. They are recruiting me to come in and play, not just sit on the bench and I swear that I will be either All-Pac 10 or an All-American. I promise."
Merrill said he plans to attend this weekend's Apple Cup game against Washington State at Husky Stadium along with several other recruits.
