Spencer Hawes, a 6-foot-11 center from Seattle Prep, will announce his college intentions Tuesday at 3PM at his high school. Hawes will be choosing between North Carolina, Stanford and Washington.
"This is a guy who is on a different plane in terms of scoring the basketball," said Scout.com national basketball analyst Dave Telep when asked for a breakdown of Hawes' strengths and weaknesses in an interview with InsideCarolina.com. "He scores like a well schooled college player – he’s got the jump hook, drop step, scores ambidextrously – he’s a tough matchup for a high school kid because he’s throwing so much at you that you just can’t process it. To me, though, the one part of Spencer’s game that really needed some work heading into the 2005 AAU circuit was going out and being a consistently dominant guy. And he was a walking double-double all summer long – of the 30 and 15 variety, not 10-10. That alone, how dominant he was against good players, putting up big numbers, you just can’t discount that."
Hawes played last year with NBA lottery pick
Martell Webster
, who signed a letter of intent with
Washington
. He also played AAU ball that year with Seattle Friends of Hoop. Besides Webster, Hawes also played alongside
Jon Brockman
(Washington),
Mitch Johnson
(
Stanford
) and
Micah Downs
(
Kansas
). Basketball also runs in the family, as Spencer's father Jeff and uncle Steve both played collegiately at Washington.
After considering
Connecticut
and
UCLA
, Hawes trimmed his list to the Cardinal, Tarheels and Huskies back in early September. He has taken official visits to all three schools and all three head coaches (Trent Johnson, Roy Williams and Lorenzo Romar) have all had their one in-home visit with the Hawes family.
So now all fans of the three schools can do is wait until Tuesday at 3PM PST to find out where Scout.com's #2 rated center will be playing his college basketball. Once he decides, Hawes will go ahead and sign during basketball's early signing period in November.
Stay tuned!
