The Opening: Erik Brown Update

WR Erik Brown

Fontana (Calif.) Summit wide out Erik Brown made his commitment to Washington public last week at The Opening but there was a lot that went on behind the scenes that made this a pretty intriguing recruitment.

Erik Brown emerged almost out nowhere this past spring to become one of the elite receivers in the west region. He had his coming out party at the NLA 7 on 7 in Las Vegas in early March and his stock just kept rising ever since.

Houston was his first offer and Oregon State became his first Pac 12 offer. When UCLA offered him in April while on an unofficial visit, Brown all but gave a soft commitment to the Bruins.

"I told them I was coming but I wanted to still take trips and look around," Brown said. "UCLA was the local school and I wanted to go there since my sophomore year. I felt good about them but still wasn't ready to shut things down.

"Then Washington got involved and I really felt comfortable with the coaches there. I actually almost committed to Washington back in April but I couldn't do that without ever visiting. I felt like leaving home was the best thing for me and that's when I really started thinking more and more that I belonged at UW."

Brown got his opportunity to see the Huskies up close and personal just a few days before The Opening.

"I went out to Washington for their Rising Stars Camp and I just fell in love with the place," Brown said. "I knew right then I was ready to make this happen and be a Husky. Once I saw the town and met the coaches and all the great people associated with the University, it just felt right to me.

"Don't get me wrong, it was still a very tough decision to say no to UCLA. That's my hometown school and my family really wanted me to go there but they're all about UW now. I just love Washington and bonded with the WR Coach, Eric Kiesu. He's the greatest dude ever and my decision is rock solid right now."

Brown said he still wants to take some official visits and mentioned a handful of schools he wants to see.

"I need to get out to Notre Dame," Brown said. "I want to see Nebraska, Oregon State and California too. Rob Likens is a great dude at Cal and those are all great schools for me. I'm solid though, I wouldn't announce my decision to the whole nation like this if I wasn't solid and I think UW is building the best wide receiver corp in the nation and I'm excited to be a part of it."
