SEATTLE - Joe Meggs singled home Michael Camporeale with the winning run as Washington outlasted Arizona State 8-7 in 11 innings in the opener of a season ending Pac-12 series at Husky Ballpark on Friday evening.
The Huskies (14-14 Pac-12, 23-31) won their fourth straight game and have won six straight in conference play.
With the game tied at 7 going into the bottom of the 11th, Jayce Ray flied out to shallow center for the first out. Camporeale then walked on five pitches against sidearming reliever Josh McAlister (0-1), the sixth Sun Devil pitcher. On a 2-1 pitch to Robert Pehl, Camporeale stole second. Pehl popped up to third for the second out but Brian Wolfe walked to bring Meggs to the plate. He lined a 1-1 pitch into center field. Camporeale raced around third and beat the throw home by Kasey Coffman.
That made a winner of Trevor Dunlap (4-3), the third Husky pitcher. He went three and two thirds innings, allowing one run on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out one.
The only run off Dunlap came with one out in the top of the 10th when
hit a screaming line drive on the first pitch he saw into the visitors bullpen in left field for his fifth home run of the season and a 7-6 Sun Devil lead.
The Huskies, who previously fell behind in the game 4-0 and 6-5 but came back each time, did so again in the bottom of the 10th, tying the game at 7 thanks to Braden Bishop. After Parker Guinn got hit near the shoulder by a
pitch to lead off the inning, Bishop pinch ran moved to second when Ty Afenir successfully laid down a sacrifice on a risky two strike count. Then Bishop stole third and scored on a ground out by Erik Forgione.
(15-13, 34-19-1) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second against starter Jared Fisher. Singles by
, Nathaniel Causey and Drew Stankiewicz loaded the bases. Dalton Dinatale singled to drive in Rossiter for 1-0 and another single by Jake Peevyhouse plated two more runners for 3-0. After Coffman walked to load the bases again, Michael Benjamin lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Dinatale for 4-0.
The Huskies came back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth against Sun Devil starter
. Jayce Ray made it all possible. The Huskies had the bases loaded when Ray hit a potential double play grounder to short. Andrew Ely got forced at second but Ray just did beat the relay to first, allowing Afenir to score the Huskies' first run and opening the door for more. Camporeale lined a single just over shortstop Stankiewicz into left center to score Forgione for 4-2. Pehl got the Huskies even at 4 when he lined a single to right center to score Ray and Camporeale. Wolfe followed with a line double into left center to score Pehl for a 5-4 lead.
Arizona State tied the game at 5 in the top of the sixth when Causey doubled, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch by Fisher. Then the Sun Devils went ahead 6-5 in the top of the eighth. Causey led off with a walk. Tucker Esmay pinch ran, took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a single by Stankiewicz and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Dinatale.
The Huskies, however, came back again in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 6. Afenir led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Forgione, and scored on a ground single to right by Ely.
Neither starter factored into the decision. For the Huskies Fisher went six innings, allowing five runs, all earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out two. For the Sun Devils Trevor Williams went only five. He gave up five runs, all earned, on nine hits. He walked three and struck out six.
The two teams continue the series at Husky Ballpark at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Austin Voth will take the mound for the home team.
