SEATTLE - Trevor Dunlap retired Cody Scaggari on a flare to second baseman Erik Forgione for the final out of the game as Washington held on to beat Utah 3-2 in the finale of a three game series at Husky Ballpark on a cloudy Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Huskies (10-14 Pac-12, 19-30) won their second straight against the Utes (6-21, 17-28) and took the series two games to one.
The home team took a 3-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning with reliever Tyler Kane on the mound aiming to preserve the shutout. He got pinch hitter Connor Eppard to pop up to shortstop for the first out. Tyler Relf grounded a single to left. Konnor Armijo popped out to Forgione for the second out. Wyler Smith, who finished the game 3 for 4, then pulled a 1-2 pitch from Kane over the visitors bullpen in left field for a two run homer, his first of the season and a 3-2 Husky lead.
Dunlap entered the game and went to 2-2 in the count before retiring Scaggari for his third save of the season and second is as many days. He also saved a 5-2 Husky win on Saturday.
Husky starter Tyler Davis went four scoreless innings allowing four hits and one walk while striking out one. Zach Wright (3-5) relieved Davis and got the win, going two innings, allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out one.
Tanner Banks (1-5) took the loss for the Utes despite recording a quality start. He went six and two thirds innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.
The Huskies got to Banks for two runs and a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Ty Afenir led off with a bloop single to right center and Jayce Ray lined a single to left to put Huskies at first and second. Andrew Ely advanced the runners with a sacrifice, and Robert Pehl lined a single to right to score Afenir for a 1-0 lead and send Ray to third. Michael Camporeale then grounded into a fielder's choice, but avoided getting doubled up at first, allowing Ray to score for 2-0.
The Huskies made it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth. With one out Joe Meggs walked, moved to second on a bunt base hit by Parker Guinn and took third when third baseman committed a throwing error on the bunt. Forgione then hit a hard grounder that looked like it might get into right field for a hit but second baseman
dove to his left to field the ball and threw the runner out at first. On the play Meggs scored.
In addition to scoring the decisive run, Meggs also made the defensive play of the game in the top of the seventh. The Utes had runners on at first and second with only one out when Scaggari hit a sinking line drive to left. Meggs ran to his right and made a diving catch to prevent a likely extra base hit and maybe two runs. Kane then got out of the inning when
popped out to Forgione in shallow right field.
After a day off on Monday, the Huskies travel to Portland to face the Pilots in their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, May 14. They then face
on the road in the Apple Cup of baseball from May 17-19 before returning home to end the regular season against
