SEATTLE - Kaitlin Inglesby fired a three hitter and helped her own cause at the plate with a three run homer as 14th ranked Washington beat 16th ranked Stanford 7-1 in the finale of a three game Pac-12 series at Husky Softball Stadium on a cool and cloudy Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Huskies (34-13, 12-6) won the series two games to one after the Cardinal (29-15, 6-9) won the middle game of the series earlier in the day 6-4.
The Cardinal had a chance to grab an early lead right away in the top of the first inning when Hanna Winter led off the game by reaching safely on an errant throw by Kimberlee Souza, Kayla Bonstrom reached on an infield single, and Jenna Rich walked on four pitches to load the bases. However, Inglesby escaped the inning unscathed by retiring the next three batters, Cassandra Roulund on a popout to second, Erin Ashby on a liner back to the pitcher, and Leah White on a called third strike.
From that point the only threat Inglesby (19-5)faced came in the top of the fifth when
scored its only run of the game and tied the game at 1. Jessica Plaza lined a double into the gap in the right center field and two outs later Bonstrom drove in pinch runner Tylyn Wells with a ground single to center. After that Inglesby retired the final seven batters to notch the complete game. She walked one and struck out five.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Hooch Fagaly lined a home run on a 1-2 pitch from Teagan Gerhart (16-8) into the right center field bleachers.
Then, after Stanford scored the tying run in the top of the inning, the Huskies answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Kelli Suguro doubled off the wall in right center and Victoria Hayward walked after battling Gerhart through an 11 pitch at-bat. Fagaly lined a 1-1 pitch into shallow left field to score Suguro with the go-ahead run and a 2-1 lead. Inglesby then stepped to the plate and absolutely crushed an 0-2 pitch well over the wall in left field for a three run homer and a 5-1 lead.
Whitney Jones capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with her first career homer, a two run shot into the right field bleachers just inside the foul pole.
Gerhart suffered the loss for the Cardinal, allowing five runs on six hits in four and a third innings. She walked three and struck out one.
After a week off the Huskies return to action when they travel to Salt Lake City for a three game Pac-12 series against the
Utes from May 3-5.
