A breathtaking Cougar win was the talk of the Palouse on Friday night, but it didn’t stop there. Washington State’s comeback win captivated football fans across the country – and at one point had “Apple Cup” and “Go Cougs” trending worldwide on Twitter. Beyond that, fans and pundits alike agreed the Huskies didn’t lose this game; the Cougars snatched it away.

Texas Tech fans warned Washington State faithful throughout the season that almost no deficit was insurmountable under coach Mike Leach. After narrowly missing a couple of improbable comeback wins earlier in the season, the Cougars finally captured one when Andrew Furney connected on a 27-field goal to propel WSU to a 31-28 overtime win Friday against No. 25 Washington at Martin Stadium. – Chris Chancellor, Cougfan.com

Bishop Sankey didn’t hear many catcalls or insults from Cougars fans Friday. The Washington Huskies running back was too busy trying to fight off Washington State defenders and find yards that weren’t there. - Ryan Divish, Tacoma News Tribune

In a rivalry known for unpredictability, the 2012 version will rank among the tops in Apple Cup lore. Washington led 28-10 after Bishop Sankey's second touchdown run late in the third quarter, but the Huskies wilted under a siege of self-inflicted mistakes with turnovers and penalties coming back in favor of the Cougars. Tim Booth, The Associated Press

Mike Leach, the embattled Washington State football coach, told USA Today last week the offseason for his team "would be one for the ages." Friday, the Cougars launched that siege with an Apple Cup for the ages. -- Bud Withers, The Seattle Times

Getting to eight victories was supposed to be Washington's stepping stone. Proof that they were completed remedied from a midseason stretch of three bad losses and continuing on the path of yearly, incremental improvement under Steve Sarkisian. That path to Washington getting its benchmark victory on Friday got sideswiped by the largest collapse in the 105 matchups in the Apple Cup. -- Tim Booth, The Associated Press

A week ago, Keith Price made the play. A week ago, the throw was perfect and the result was a huge gain of yards. A week ago, Price's decision to not give up on a play and make something out of nothing was lauded and praised. …But that was a week ago. -- Ryan Divish, The News Tribune

…the Huskies looked like they’d run away with the game after opening an 18-point lead in the third quarter …But it’s the Apple Cup. And anything’s possible in the Apple Cup. -- Nick Eaton, Seattle P.I.

The Cougars played without their heart and soul, senior linebacker Travis Long, who watched on crutches from the sideline. They trailed most of the game. And yet here were thousands of students, parents and children, sprinting to midfield once Furney’s kick split the uprights and the Cougars completed the largest comeback in Apple Cup history. -- Christian Caple, Spokesman Review

The Washington football team took the next step, all right. The Huskies stepped to the side to avoid crazed Cougars fans who rushed the field after this game. And then they walked to the locker room, heads down. -- Jerry Brewer, The Seattle Times

Retailers can market the day as they see fit. But anyone who saw the 105th Apple Cup knows how it will be forever remembered. It was Whack Friday. -- John Blanchette, Spokesman Review
