Profile: Cole Luke
Position: Defensive Back
Location: Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton
Weight: 170 pounds
Recruiting: Luke narrowed his choices to a final four of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona State. He took official visits to Notre Dame and OU before shutting things down and committed to the Irish.
What to Like:. Luke has just about every physical tool you’re looking for in an elite cover corner. He has a nice frame at 6-0, with long arms and is very strong in press coverage. He runs very well, and not just good quickness but top end speed as well. He can break on the ball and has excellent change of direction but also has the ability to run down the field with the fastest of receivers. Luke shows excellent ball skills as well and is a very instinctual player. Add in his toughness and ability to step up in run support and it’s easy to see why Luke was such a coveted prospect by schools all over the country.
What may be of concern: It’s really not a concern but Luke will need to put on some weight when he gets to college (what HS senior doesn’t). His frame will easily be able to handle another 20 pounds or without losing any of his athleticism. With his 6-0 frame and solid build, Luke should really flourish physically once he hits a college weight room.
Overall Analysis: Luke is tremendous talent with all the tools to be an early impact player at the next level. He missed all the big summer events but had he attended a NIKE Camp or even The Opening, where he would have had the opportunity to compete against other top players from outside the west, we could be talking about Luke as the top overall corner prospect in the region, he’s that good. He has tremendous upside and the toughness and worth ethic to match. It won’t be a surprise at all if Luke sees the field as a true freshman next year.
