SEATTLE - Kaitlin Inglesby pitched three scoreless innings of relief and got Logan Hall to tap into a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning as the 18th ranked Huskies beat the 24th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders 2-0 in NCAA regional action at Husky Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory in a winner's bracket game, the Huskies (38-17) will face Harvard at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon for a berth in super regionals May 24-27.
After starter Kasey Stanchek walked Raven Richardson on four pitches to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Husky head coach Heather Tarr brought Inglesby into the circle to preserve a 2-0 lead.
Inglesby struck out Holley Gentsch swinging but then Ashley Hamada laid a sacrifice down the third base line that Kimberlee Souza fielded but had no play on, putting runners on at first and second. Emily Bledsoe then singled off Souza's glove to load the bases. Hall came to the plate and hit a tapper back to Inglesby on the very first pitch. Inglesby underhanded the ball to Shawna Wright to force Richardson at home and Wright's relay to first beat Hall by a step to end the inning.
The Red Raiders threatened again in the sixth when Mikey Kenney got hit by a pitch to lead off and Adriana Perez singled to center. On that play the Huskies caught a break when Kenney fell down between second and third. Center fielder Jerrin Faasua threw the ball to Souza in plenty of time and she easily tagged out Kenney. After that Inglesby retired the final five batters she faced to nail down her fifth save of the season.
Inglesby also scored the first run for the Huskies, the designated visiting team, in the top of the second. She walked against Cara Custer and took second on a sacrifice by Kylee Lahners. After Faasua lined out, Wright grounded a single to center to plate Inglesby for a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies added a valuable insurance run for 2-0 in the top of the third. Souza led off with a single and Kimi Pohlman walked. Victoria Hayward advanced the runners with a sacrifice and Niki Williams got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following an Inglesby line out to center for out #2, Lahners walked to force home Souza.
Stanchek (10-2) got the win with four no-hit innings. She walked four and struck out three. Inglesby finished with two hits allowed, no walks and two strikeouts. Custer (25-11) suffered the complete game loss, allowing three hits. She walked four and struck out two.
Harvard (35-14) survived two elimination games to advance to Sunday's regional final against the Huskies. The Crimson first beat
Maryland
3-2 in extra innings, scoring the eventual winning run when Kasey Lange drove in Ashley Heritage with a bloop single in the top of the eighth. Rachel Brown fired a complete game four hitter in the circle, striking out 12, including the side in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Then the Crimson sent
Texas Tech
home with a 2-0 win.
