Babiash pulls the trigger

Poway (Calif.) defensive back Derek Babiash was expected to have a good time on his visit to Washington for Junior Day. He wasn't expecting to be wowed like he was and before heading home, the athlete ended the recruiting process.

"I committed today, I'm a Dawg," Derek Babiash said. "It was really everything, it wasn't just one thing that did it for me. I loved the coaches and how they get along with the players. I have a really good relationship with the DB coach, Keith Heyward, he's the one who recruited me and I'm looking forward to playing for him.

"The campus, the city, the academics, everything was great for me. My mom came up with me and UW was her first choice all along so she was very excited for me as well. She loves the city of Seattle and the academics there as well. I wasn't planning to do this but I'm definitely glad I did."

Babiash was just offered by Oklahoma last week and said he planned to visit the Sooners in the summer. He also planned to camp with UCLA, San Diego State and San Jose State.

"I'm shutting everything down, I'm a Husky," Babiash said. "I won't be taking any more visits except for an official visit to UW. This is just the best fit for me and I'm actually relieved it's over.

"Washington is on the rise for sure and I love the new coaches. The offense was already rolling and I think the defense will turn things around quick as well. I wasn't expecting this but I got that special feeling on the visit and knew this was where I wanted to be."
